After what I think was a pretty good draft for the New Orleans Saints last
week (Reggie Bush and two experienced starters are nothing to sneeze at), there
are still a few holes to be filled.
Free agents have been signed in hopes of filling those voids, but there's still
at least one unsigned area prospect that I believe could become a big part of
the Saints defense.
Barry
Robertson has spent the past two seasons ripping through opposing offenses
as an inside linebacker for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs.
Robertson led the
Bulldogs with 103 tackles last season (54 solos) while adding three sacks, an
interception and six pass breakups. That was after making 68 tackles with three
sacks, an interception and a forced fumble and recovery as a junior.
Robertson is a underated and aggressive linebacker who would stand a chance of
making the Saints squad. He's also a native of Hattiesburg, so you have to feel
he'd love the opportunity to play in the area.
The Saints already to have enough safeties on the roster, which is a shame
because there's another Tech linebacker who could probably help there.
Jeremy Hamilton turned in four solid seasons for the Bulldogs as an outsider
linebacker, but standing at 5-11 and not weighing that much over 200, he doesn't
have the size to be an NFL linebacker.
But Hamilton showed good coverage skills in college, and with his tackling
ability and speed, he could push to make a NFL team as a strong safety.
Both are deserving of looks from the next level and will hopefully get a chance
to try and move on.
